Daar zijn we weer <stop>

Reisverslag 25 juni 2004

Travel update 25 juni 2004 We leave the internet café after mailing our last message. We go into a poor neighbourhood. The Chinese sell here all kinds of things, especially food but cloths as well. We buy some sweet bread with the risk of getting ill. It is all very chaotic on the market, but it seems to be a Chinese habit. Some blocks further we buy some bottles of beer and start searching for a restaurant. Erik still knows a good one from his last visit to Beijing. We still have not found it after 1 hour walking. We thing it has been replaced by another building. We enter another place and have dinner over there. We end on some square where we have a beer and finally go home for a good night sleep.
![]() Next day we meet our new guide: Xi Qing (Sjie Sjing) and Mr Chu, our driver. We go to the harbour Tang Gu close to the big city of Tianjin. We arrive around noon and have lunch in our new hotel. After lunch we go for a quick skate. Skating seems to be very rare in China because everybody is looking at us. We need to hurry once we get back at the hotel because our container has arrived. We need to witness when the doors are opened. We arrive in the harbour after a ride through the old and new city. There is only one container on the dock. It is ours. The seal is already cut by the customs officer. Now Ille has the honour to unlock it. And … our cars are in it!! Everything looks OK. It was a thrilling moment whether the cars would start, but all worked out well. We may not take the cars yet because we still lack correct licence plates and documents. They will arrive the next morning.
![]() We wake up early. It is an exciting day because we get to drive our cars for the first time in China. We leave immediately for the harbour. We receive the licence plates and documents quite easily and we take off. We invite the police officers and the journalist for lunch at the hotel as a gesture handling things smoothly. After lunch we go to an antique market with all kind of hand made relics. In the evening we visit a movie. The Day after Tomorrow is playing with Chinese subtitles. The quality is really rubbish. After that we have a few beers at a place were only Chinese people are. The seem to see a tourist for the first time. We are really spoiled by them with all kinds of treats (nuts, melon, see grass). Thursday morning our journey begins. We travel to Simatai to visit the Great Wall of China. The wall is still authentic here. We are not used to driving at the Chinese freeway yet. Some drive 30 kmh, others pass us left and right when we drive 70 kmh ourselves. We arrive around noon and start immediately by climbing the Wall. Some Chinese ladies are waiting for us at the first corner. They join us on our walk above and guide us a little bit (off course they try to sell souvenirs). We go up very fast in order to shake them off, but it does not work. Finally we agreed to buy a set of cards to get rid of them. One of the ladies gets flower for Ille on every occasion. Spelled by this gesture he offers the double price for the cards in stead of bargaining. We leave for Beijing the next morning. In the afternoon we visit the Summer Palace of the Emperor. It is very impressive. Now we are writing this message in an internet café. Greetings form a warm and lovely China, Rob, Ille, Erik and Martijn.
